Car payment calculator in Montréal
Before you shop, it helps to know which payment fits your budget. This calculator lets you enter a vehicle’s price, your down payment, your trade-in value and an interest rate, then compare loan lengths. The result is an estimate: it points you in the right direction, it does not replace a lender’s written offer.
Estimate for information only, with GST and QST included on the price after trade-in. The actual rate, term and payment depend on the lender and your file; financing is subject to lender approval. Registration and insurance are not included.
How to use the calculator
- Enter the listed price of the vehicle you like.
- Add the estimated value of your trade-in, if you have one. Our sell and trade form helps you get it.
- Enter your down payment.
- Type the annual interest rate. If the field is left blank, the calculator uses an example rate.
- Pick a term and compare the payment, the amount financed and the total cost of credit.
The example rate: 9.99% over 72 months
When you do not enter a rate, the calculator starts from 9.99% for 72 months, the example rate published in our own inventory feed. It is an example only; the actual rate depends on the lender and your file. Depending on your credit, your income, the vehicle you choose and the length of the loan, the rate you are offered may be lower or higher. Replace it with a rate a lender has quoted you for a more accurate estimate.
Taxes: GST and QST
In Québec, a vehicle bought from a dealer is taxed: 5% GST and 9.975% QST, or 14.975% in total. The calculator applies these taxes to the price after your trade-in is deducted, then subtracts your down payment from the tax-included amount. Worked example: a $20,000 vehicle with a $5,000 trade-in gives a taxable amount of $15,000, which means $750 in GST and $1,496.25 in QST, for $17,246.25 before the down payment. Your trade-in therefore lowers both the price and the taxes.
What the calculator leaves out
- Registration and the fees charged by the SAAQ.
- Your car insurance premium.
- Maintenance, winter tires and fuel, which belong in your monthly budget.
Reading the result
The amount financed is what you actually borrow. The total cost of credit is the interest paid over the whole loan. The total obligation adds the two together. A longer term lowers the payment but almost always raises the total cost: compare 60, 72 and 84 months before you decide.

Questions about the calculation
Is the calculator’s result a financing offer?
No. It is an estimate for information only. Only the lender sets the rate, the term and the payment, after reviewing your file.
Why are taxes calculated after the trade-in?
In Québec, your trade-in value is deducted from the price before GST and QST are calculated. The calculator follows that rule.
Where does the 9.99% rate come from?
It is the 72-month example rate shown in our inventory feed. It is an example only; the actual rate depends on the lender and your file.
Does the down payment lower the taxes?
No. The down payment comes off the amount after taxes: it reduces what you finance, but not the GST or QST. It is the trade-in that lowers the taxable amount.
